The U.S. military commander of Iraq's biggest province said Thursday American troops were virtually powerless to stop escalating booby-trap and bomb attacks on their convoys.

A US soldier has been killed after his armoured car drove over a land mine on the road from the centre of Baghdad to the airport.  It is the second American death reported in Iraq today.
